Job Summary
The Charge Nurse is an expert clinician who demonstrates a high level of knowledge and expertise in a specialty as well as general nursing. The Charge Nurse consistently demonstrates excellence in all areas of nursing practice including nursing care delivery, staff education, and collaboration. Evaluates and works to improve the process of patient care delivery within the unit.
The Charge Nurse manages complex, unpredictable patient care situations and is a nursing shift leader. Serves as a clinical and operational resource to the nursing staff. The Charge Nurse serves as the mentor on the unit with the goal of increasing nurse engagement, professional development of their staff, and safe quality care with improved outcomes.
The scope of responsibility, duties and accountability at the facility department and position levels includes knowledge and practice of the clinical / technical skills necessary to the position consistent with the QCHP Nursing / Midwifery Competency Framework and Scope of Practice. Nursing job duties are to meet the Joint Commission International and the Plan of Care, and other regulatory requirements.
Job Responsibilities 1
- Identify and assess patient safety concerns with respect to age and developmental considerations. Intervene to provide a safe environment and evaluate effectiveness of intervention for patient.
- Provide expert comprehensive direct and indirect care to the specific population needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family, and condition needs.
- Provide advanced assessment skills, integrating appropriate data sources to assess the signs, symptoms, reactions, behaviors, or general appearance to determine normal versus abnormal characteristics.
- Evaluate and work to improve the process of patient care delivery within the unit.
- Perform skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy, and the initiation of peripheral venous access.
- Serve as a clinical and operational resource for all nursing activities in the department. Provide assistance to co-workers, new staff, temporary staff and students.
- Delegate and assign tasks to health care workers within the scope of their job responsibilities.

Evaluate, facilitate, and promote patient flow, coordinate discharge planning and team rounding.Participate in the completion of required competencies.Champion department improvement activities.Assume responsibility for mentoring, coaching and staff development.
