About the role
As the Head of Energy Underwriting, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the energy portfolio, including oil & gas, power, renewables, and infrastructure projects. The role requires deep technical expertise to assess and price risks, negotiate terms, and structure tailored solutions for clients in partnership with brokers. You will set underwriting guidelines, monitor portfolio performance, and ensure adherence to governance and compliance frameworks. Externally, you will act as a senior market representative, building credibility with stakeholders and driving the company’s presence in regional and international energy markets.
Responsibilities
Underwriting Strategy
- Define and implement the company’s energy underwriting strategy in line with corporate objectives and risk appetite.
- Identify opportunities for portfolio growth across oil & gas, power, and renewable energy sectors.
- Ensure consistent application of underwriting standards and pricing models.
Risk Assessment & Technical Oversight
Evaluate, structure, and price complex energy risks with accuracy and discipline.Develop bespoke coverage solutions to meet client and broker requirements.Monitor exposure and aggregation levels to maintain portfolio balance.Portfolio Management
Oversee the performance of the energy book to achieve profitability targets.Regularly review and adjust underwriting guidelines to reflect market dynamics.Ensure compliance with reinsurance treaties and optimise facultative placements.Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and develop the underwriting team to achieve technical and commercial excellence.Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.Manage resource allocation and succession planning within the department.Market Engagement
Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, reinsurers, and corporate clients.Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and high-level negotiations.Enhance the company’s visibility and credibility within regional and global energy markets.Candidate Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or another relevant field (MBA or postgraduate degree advantageous).Recognised professional certifications (e.g. ACII, FCII, CPCU, ARM) demonstrating technical excellence.Experience
7–10 years experience within Energy underwriting.Proven track record of underwriting complex energy risks, supported by extensive market knowledge and leadership experience.Proven track record of interacting with regional and international insurers, reinsurers, and intermediaries.Technical Competencies
Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills with ability to assess complex risks.
Broad knowledge across all energy risks.
Proficiency in business practices, data management, and reporting, supported by advanced computer skills.

Excellent negotiation and problem‑solving capabilities at a senior level.Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with internal and external stakeholders.Effective time management, facilitation, and decision‑making in high‑pressure environments.Languages
