Description

A Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in caring for animals. Their duties vary depending on the workplace but generally includes :

1. Clinical & Medical Support :

Prepare exam rooms
and set up equipment.
Restrain animals
safely during exams or procedures.
Assist with diagnostics
such as holding pets for X-rays or lab tests.
Clean and sterilize
surgical instruments.
Administer medications
under a vet’s supervision).

2. Animal Care & Handling :

Feed, bathe, and exercise

animals.

Monitor vital signs

temperature, pulse, respiration).

Provide post-operative care

like monitoring recovery.

Comfort distressed animals

and keep them calm.

3. Administrative Duties :

Greet clients

and schedule appointments.

Update medical records

and file lab reports.

Manage inventory

of supplies and medications.

Educate pet owners

on basic care (e.g., nutrition, grooming).

4. Cleaning & Maintenance :

Disinfect cages, kennels, and surgical areas.

Launder towels and bedding.

Dispose of biohazard waste

properly.
