Overview
The Urotherapist through his / her practice provides consultations for patients with Lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunction and Bladder Bowel dysfunction (BBD). Supervised by the urologist, performs procedures such as urinary catheterizations, uroflow with EMG, urodynamic studies, biofeedback sessions, Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), transcutaneous and percutaneous parasacral, urinary drainage, tube irrigations, ultrasonic bladder scanning, education of other healthcare professionals, patients, and families, and reinforcement of home-going education related to self-catheterization or urinary drainage tube irrigations. The Urotherapist is responsible for responding to calls on the patient care units, the emergency department and collaborates with outpatient clinic teams as required.

- Makes treatment decisions under the supervision of the Attending Physician essential for the management of patients with Lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunction and Bladder Bowel dysfunction (BBD).
- Prescribes exams and medications under the supervision of the pediatric urology medical team.
- Provides relevant input on pre and post op patients with complex genitourinary reconstructions.
- Uses case management skills and principles in the planning and evaluation of client care across a continuum.
- Plans, implements and evaluates processes to prevent or limit unsafe or unethical health and care practices by others.
- Performs or requests and evaluates diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient.
- Communicates confidently and effectively with other workers both in collegial and subordinate positions.
- Plans, implements and evaluates processes to empower the client populations in attaining and maintaining maximal functional wellness.
- Plans, implements and evaluates processes to ensure the efficient use of human and material resources.
- Plans, implements and evaluates processes to implement outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care.
- Plans, implements and evaluates processes to ensure assessment of physical, cognitive, and social functional ability of the client in all developmental stages.
- Plans implements and evaluates processes to facilitate the use of assessment findings to diagnose, plan, deliver, and evaluate quality care stages.
- Performs designated procedures after demonstrating competency and according to written standardized procedure where applicable.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions. Individualizes the plan of care and treatment based upon the desired treatment outcomes.
- Utilizes effective communication and interactions with patients, family, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.
- Acts as advisor and facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.
- Provides counseling / anticipatory guidance to patient, family and / or staff regarding Urology-related needs.
- Participates in research design, implementation and interpretation.
- Applies research-based Pediatric Urodynamic knowledge as the foundation for evidence-based practice.
- Designs and Redesigns patient centered care processes based on analysis of outcomes and evidence-based knowledge.
- Plans, implements and evaluates processes to facilitate the use of clinical judgment and decision-making skills to bring multiple perspectives into the interpretation of situations and problems encountered.
- Applies an ethical decision-making planning framework to clinical situations that incorporate moral concepts, professional ethics, and law and respects diverse values and beliefs.
- Uses epidemiological, social, and environmental data to draw inferences regarding the health status of client populations.
- Plans, implements and evaluates processes to ensure the use of outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care through the acquisition of data and the questioning of inconsistencies, allowing for the revision of actions and goals.
- Participates in audit and research planning that focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of treatment interventions.
- Plans, implements and evaluates processes to facilitate an individual’s capacity to assume responsibility for self-care.
- Assists educational specialists and clinicians in the development and implementation of educational / orientation documents and participates in orientation educational activities.
- Takes into consideration the appropriateness and cost effectiveness of services utilized (both human and material resources) in providing care
- Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others
- Assess the learning needs of patient and families, and develops and / or implements teaching programs to meet these identified needs in the hospital or community.
- Maintains knowledge of current / new evidence-based practices and incorporates findings into clinical practice.
- Takes accountability for their own clinical and professional growth based on evaluation and feedback. In collaboration with leadership, sets realistic goals for performance plan.
